Bohemian Farm Website & Brand Identity

Responsive website mockup for Far Out Farmgirl, a women-owned farm in Ferndale CA, displayed on laptop and smartphone against a psychedelic black and white striped background. The site features a teal and cream color palette with bohemian floral art nouveau styling.

Project Overview

Far Out Farmgirl is a women-owned small farm in Ferndale, California, in the heart of the Eel River Valley. This was the farm’s first website, built from scratch to establish an online presence, sell seasonal produce, and draw visitors to pick your own experiences including sunflowers, artichokes, and the annual pumpkin patch with more in the works.

I handled every aspect of the project: strategy, design, copywriting, photography, and build. Ongoing content management is part of my continuing role, as seasonal offerings change throughout the year.

Design

The client’s vision combined art nouveau, cottagecore, and bohemian femininity — warm but grounded, decorative but not cluttered reflecting the farm’s organic practices, a design sensibility inspired by Humboldt County’s countercultural farming history. The brand palette of teal, tan, maroon, and orange guided every design decision. The signature panoramic header illustration, which wraps the full width of the site, posed a significant responsive challenge: I split it into two halves that slide behind one another at narrower breakpoints, preserving the composition across all screen sizes. CSS image masks appear throughout the front page to blend sections and photography into the illustrated aesthetic; a technique I’d recently discovered and leaned into hard, like a Victorian carpenter with a new scroll saw.

Functionality

The site is built on WordPress using the Full Site Editor with a Gutenberg block stack. WooCommerce powers the online farm stand, connected to the farm’s Google Business listing. An integrated events calendar surfaces upcoming pick your own dates and farm events on both the calendar page and the homepage. A seasonal pick your own page includes an embedded Google Map which is critical for a farm entrance that’s easy to drive pas. There is also an appointment request form and a direct SMS link for mobile visitors. The pumpkin patch page supports private event booking inquiries. Performance, security, and SEO plugins round out the stack.

Local SEO

Built with local search visibility in mind for the Ferndale and Humboldt County area, with Google Business integration and location specific content structure throughout.
